On the day of marriage the first ritual which is performed is Mandap puja. This puja is made to make the mandap sacred as the marriage ceremony is going to take place in that mandap. The bride’s father brings the groom to the mandap and is welcomed through a ceremony called Var puja. The bride’s parents honor the groom by washing his feet and offer him silk dhoti and pitambar, which are to be worn by him on the wedding day.

Garlanding Ceremony:

In this ritual the bride is escorted to the mandap by her uncles and no one is supposed to see the bride’s face. The bride’s face is covered with peacock feathers. The bride and groom stand on the either side of a white cloth, which separates them. They both have to stand till the sacred marriage mantras were recited and after that the cloth is removed and they garland each other.

Dhare Herdu or giving the bride to the groom:

In this ritual the bride’s father gives his daughter to the groom. He takes the groom’s hand and places it on the bride’s hand. Then her father pours water into the groom’s hand called dhara, signifying that she is now officially his. Corn is then put into the sacred fire five times before the seven vows begin.

Saptapadi:
